| Townland of Kilmore which contains Ballinameela Clachan
This is a copy of a page from the Printed Griffith’s Valuation of Ireland which lists the occupiers of land and houses in the townland circa 1860. It also gives the names of the immediate lessors (i.e. the persons from whom the tenants in the townland rented their land and houses), provides a description and size of each holding in acres, roods and perches and a valuation of the property in pounds, shillings and pence. Note that an office is a farm outbuilding and a cottier held his/her land from a farmer, not from the head landlord. The numbers and letters in the first column are used to identify holdings and houses on the six inch valuation maps. Where a person or persons have a holding which is one continuous plot of land it is identified by a number only. Where a holding consists of a number of plots of land separated from each other within the townland, each plot is identified by a capital letter. Where there is more than one house on a plot of land a lower case letter is used to identify each house. Note that numbers 1 to 4 cover Ballyhuriman and numbers 5 to 10 cover Ballinameela. The houses in Titruhan are all situated on the plot of land numbered 13.
From 1864 to the early 1930s valuers continued to visit the townland periodically to record any changes in occupancy. These changes can be seen in the Griffith’s Revision Booklets which are held in the PRONI, Belfast. These revisions combined with the 1901 Census Enumerators’ Returns help us to identify the changes that took place between the 1860s and the 1900s. |
