Old Photographs of Gortaghragan

The photograph below and left shows ‘the Hollies’, a pair of semi-detached houses built in Gortaghragan by ‘Bangor’ Brogan in the 1930s.

The middle photograph shows Ellen Rose McDonnell in front of the McDonnell’s house circa 1940. The photo on the right shows the same house some years previously. Notice that the collapsed outhouse shown at the side of the dwelling appears to have been rebuilt in the previous photograph. The stepping stones were a means of crossing the river for people on foot but it was shallow enough to be forded by horse-drawn vehicles .

For more information on these houses and their occupiers read Change in Gortaghragan 1860s to 1900s.
