Glenann PS went to look at Knockban. Most of the houses have fallen down so children had to become detectives and look for clues as to which buildings were houses. Evidence like fireplaces and chimneys on gable walls were used to identify the dwelling houses. They could also see that the stone used in the buildings was very plentiful in the area. It is called ‘schist.’ It was deposited in the Glens when glaciers melted at the end of the ice-age so these rocks are very old.
The building below is in Gortaghragan which was visited by St. Ciaran’s PS. Here most of the old outhouses are also built from schist and there are huge boulders of it in the surrounding fields.
