The Society’s thanks are due to the Cushendall Golf Club, the Bay Hotel, Cushendun and St. McNissi’s College, Garron Tower, for providing comfortable venues for our lectures during the year.
In this the year of the Society’s Silver Jubilee, it is appropriate that we pay tribute to those three far-seeing gentlemen, who were inspired to set up the Glens of Antrim Historical Society. They were Jack McCann, Frank Connoly and James McSparran and it must be with a sense of pride that they have seen their dream realised in the form of a society which can presently boast of thirty-seven Life Members and well over four hundred Members. Words are inadequate to express the Society’s gratitude to them.
The Second John Hewitt Summer School was another success story thereby showing that Summer School number one was no mere ‘flash in the pan’. When conference participants come from as far away as Japan, America, Canada and Sweden it is a ‘nine days wonder’ but when they keep returning year after year it is a measure of the importance of the Summer School.
In the words of Professor John Wilson Foster, in a letter to the Irish Times:
“The John Hewitt International Summer School is an arena of non-political, non-sectarian cultural analysis and enactment. Were it otherwise, I would not be involved, or travel six thousand miles to attend it”.
The 1990 John Hewitt Summer School takes place from 30th July to 5th August.
Finally thanks are due to the contributors of the excellent articles which make up “The Glynns” and contributions from new writers, on subjects relevant to our readership, are always welcome.
