Straid

Straid clachan is located in the townland of Straid (parish of Layd) in Glencorp.
This clachan is situated on one side of the main Cushendun-Cushendall road. The residences that remain have been rebuilt and are not immediately distinguishable from the modern houses along this road, with the exception of a well preserved whitewashed barn, the former premises of John Whiteford, a tailor. More historic out-buildings are visible from the yards of these houses and help to suggest the shape of the original clachan.

The photographs below show the main buildings which make up the clachan area today. The photograph numbers correspond to the numbers in the sketch map.

The links on the right of this page will provide you with more information on the people who occupied the clachan during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
