Knockans North clachan is located within the townland of Knockans on Rathlin Island. There is another clachan in the townland known as Knockans South or Shandragh.
The photographs below show the remains of the main buildings which make up the clachan area today. The photograph numbers correspond to the numbers in the sketch map. Strictly speaking, the buildings shown in photos 1, 2 and 3 are not part of the clachan. These three buildings (one inhabited) are located on the ‘main road’ at the entrance to the laneway or track to Ballygill clachan which is completely deserted and now in ruins. The three houses on the main road are known locally as ‘The Bridge’.
The links on the right of this page will provide you with more information on the people who occupied the clachan during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
