Dr. Eamon Phoenix (1953-2022) former lecturer in history and head of lifelong learning at Stranmillis College Belfast, was a frequent contributor to the work of the Glens of Antrim Historical Society. 
Dr. Phoenix’s impartial and fair minded interpretation of often contentious events in Northern Ireland made our shared and complex history accessible to all. In 2022 he received the Good Relations award from the Community Relations Council for his ability ‘to sensitively communicate and humanise the stories of our past’ a skill which made him a fascinating speaker.
In recognition of his life and work, his lecture to the Society in 2004 is re-posted here on our website. In this lecture Dr Phoenix discusses a few of the characters in modern Ulster history who refused to be bound by the conventions of their religious and social background.
